A documentary photographer with a powerful and uncompromising visual language, Dario De Dominicis is recognised for his ability to go beyond the surface of things, reclaiming photography’s most authentic role: that of a tool for social and human inquiry.

It is this ability to find the invisible within the visible that makes him the special guest of The Canticle of the Creatures the international photography project promoted by Trieste Photo Days in collaboration with the Order of Friars Minor and the Municipality of Assisi, on the occasion of the eighth centenary of Saint Francis of Assisi’s celebrated poem. A project that invited photographers from around the world to reinterpret, through images, the values of harmony, fraternity and responsibility towards creation that animate the earliest poetic text in Italian literature.

In this interview, De Dominicis speaks about his acclaimed long-term reportage The Franciscan Soul of Brazil: between 2013 and 2017, he followed and documented a major pilgrimage dedicated to the Saint, which takes place in Canindé, in the Northeast of Brazil, exploring the mysticism and deep religious fervour of one of the poorest regions in the country. A body of work exhibited in Rome and Rio de Janeiro, and finally brought to Assisi, an ideal homecoming.
