A unique opportunity to glean secrets, teachings, and anecdotes from three great photography professionals.

Harry Gruyaert, Colors and Storytelling

Harry Gruyaert will host an exclusive masterclass, offering insights from his extensive experience in color photography. Born in Belgium and a member of Magnum Photos since 1982, Gruyaert is renowned for his innovative approach to composition and color, influenced by movements like Pop Art and his early exposure to color television screens.

During the masterclass, he will delve into how photography can capture the essence of time and place, favoring a deeper visual aesthetic over exotic stereotypes. Participants will have the chance to learn about Gruyaert's creative process, his experiences working in diverse environments such as India, the Middle East, and North Africa, and his iconic works like TV Shots and Made in Belgium. This is a rare opportunity to explore photography as a form of visual storytelling.

Martin Miklas: The Art of Zines – Creation and Narrative

Martin Miklas, a Lisbon-based photographer originally from Slovakia, will lead a masterclass on creating zines, focusing on their role as a medium for storytelling and documentary work. Miklas is known for his conceptual and documentary photography, often exploring socio-economic and ecological themes, such as the impact of overfishing on the fishing industry in Portugal.

In this masterclass, Miklas will dive into the process of creating zines as a powerful tool for self-publishing and artistic expression. Drawing from his own experiences, particularly with projects like Abyssal Echoes and his documentation of the fishing industry, he will explore how photographers can use zines to convey complex narratives in a personal and accessible format.

Max Cavallari: Photography and Humanity – Reporting in Crisis

Max Cavallari, a photographer known for his work in documentary photography and winner of the URBAN Press Award 2024, will lead a masterclass focusing on the importance of photographic reporting in humanitarian contexts. Cavallari, an Italian photographer with extensive experience in international projects, has documented numerous critical events, such as the Covid-19 emergency in Italy and rescue operations in the Mediterranean, collaborating with the organization SOS Humanity.

In the masterclass, Cavallari will explore the challenges and responsibilities of photography in crisis contexts, sharing his personal experiences and explaining how to capture images that tell complex stories and convey empathy. Through the analysis of projects like Acquaintance, the masterclass will be a unique opportunity to understand how documentary photography can be a powerful tool for change and testimony.
