Mark Power
Mark Power's complex, meticulously crafted images, usually made with large-format cameras, have established him as one of the leading figures in contemporary British photography. While resisting simple categorization, his work moves between documentary, landscape and autobiography, exploring the unsettling terrain between imagination and reality.
After graduating with a degree in Fine Art (Painting) in 1981, Power spent two years travelling through Asia and Australasia. During those journeys, the camera gradually replaced the brush. After returning to the United Kingdom at the end of 1983, he worked for a decade in editorial and charitable markets before becoming Professor of Photography at the University of Brighton, a position he held for 25 years.
His practice increasingly shifted towards long-term, self-initiated projects, alongside major commissions in the industrial sector. He joined Magnum Photos in 2002 and became a full member in 2007. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide and is held in important public and private collections. He has published 16 photobooks.
