Rudy Gadeyne returns to Trieste Photo Days to lead a photowalk through the streets of the city.
The Belgian photographer has been developing his personal portrait of the Isle of Man, A Book of Man, a long-term project inspired by the tradition of photobooks that convey the distinctive vision of a single author, with Robert Frank’s The Americans as a declared reference. Gadeyne observes the lives of the island’s inhabitants across a wide range of situations, without passing judgement, allowing the island itself to emerge as a metaphor for a society seen through its many facets.
Gadeyne presented the project at Trieste Photo Days last year during Matt Black’s workshop, where the work in progress received an enthusiastic response. The project went on to receive an honourable mention at the URBAN Book Award 2026, in the edition chaired by Mihaela Noroc.
THE PHOTOWALK
The session will begin at 2:30 PM with a 30-minute group introduction and presentation.
As the group moves through the city, Rudy Gadeyne will share his approach to photography, point out unexpected visual opportunities, and offer suggestions and feedback in real time, keeping the conversation going as everyone photographs.
It will be a hands-on afternoon of observation and experimentation, putting into practice, on the spot, the insights of a photographer with many years of experience as a teacher.
Rudy Gadeyne
Rudy Gadeyne (Belgium) studied in Ghent, graduating in free graphics from the Sint-Lucas Higher Institute for Visual Arts, now LUCA School of Arts (1979–1983), and in art film and photography from KASK, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (1983–1985).
He has taught photography for over twenty years, at the Municipal Drawing Academy in Wetteren since 2002 and at CVO KISP in Mariakerke from 2003 to 2025.
His work grew out of theatre, and figure theatre in particular. His photographs have appeared in publications including De Scene, Figurentheaterkrant and Open Doek, and in solo exhibitions in Belgium, including The Back of the Moon at the A. Spinoy Cultural Centre in Mechelen (2001) and Uit liefde voor het spotlicht in Wetteren (2004).
Alongside his theatre work, he has pursued a substantial body of travel photography in India, Nepal, Vietnam, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, the United States, Italy and the Isle of Man.
In 2024 he published the photobook Around Rugby, now held in the collection of The Photographers' Gallery in London.
