On 30 October at Trieste Photo Days, super-guest Tony Gentile announced a preview of the first solo exhibition of the 2023 edition of the festival,
It’s the project Chinese Wispers, by Mariagrazia Beruffi, chosen by Gentile himself as part of the open call for the selection of projects to be exhibited at the next edition of Trieste Photo Days.
Selected from over 40 submissions, Chinese Wispers tells the story of the great changes in Chinese megalopolises, where the illusion of an unrestrained innovation clashes with the “Big Brother” who always watches and registers everything.
Tony Gentile writes: “Mariagrazia Beruffi with her photographs was able to make me enter the dream and nightmares of Chinese society and its «complex mental state», as she herself says. The images of her at times dreamlike and evanescent at times dramatically real transported me into a space-time journey, made up of well-constructed diptychs, in which I imagined circling among the whispers of young Chinese in search of their future.”
We therefore congratulate Mariagrazia Beruffi for winning an exhibition at Trieste Photo Days 2023!
Tony Gentile has also decided to report two honorable mentions: Lonelinesses by Antoine Buttafoghi and The Daily Life Of Three Brothers With Autism by Barbara Zanon.
“Antoine Buttafoghi has built an interesting intertwining made up of women, men, children and the elderly linked by the apparent thread of loneliness. Even if being alone does not necessarily mean experiencing loneliness and above all loneliness does not always have a negative meaning, the search for «lonely» stories isolated from the rest of life that surely was around at that moment, has made the sense of his project.”
“The story told by Barbara Zanon deserves a mention despite the fact that autism, or mental illnesses in general, is a very inflated theme in the world of photographic reportage. Personally I find the story of Emilia and Francesco very powerful that incredibly there are three children, not one but three, suffering from the same syndrome. Although it is not easy to convey some concepts through photography, I find that one of the fundamental elements that transpires in some of these photos is the love of parents for their children and this aspect should be emphasized as Barbara did. ”
We thank all the photographers who have submitted their projects to the call, inviting them to propose them again for the next initiatives!
