From the author:
"One day, while I was photographing in a very old neighborhood that never sees tourists walking around its winding streets, an old man stopped me and in a confused state asked me why I was photographing. I was overwhelmed by amazement and by ' excitement about the scene I was photographing and I nodded, stating, -Look at her, she's beautiful. - He looked at me, looked at me and replied, - Beautiful, it's an old mess - and went on.
The ancient Egyptian proverb 'a beautiful thing is never perfect' seemed suitable for the photographs I intended to take in Cairo, a fascinating sprawling metropolis of over 20 million people. A city rich in history, yet most visitors never venture beyond the pyramids and the main museum before moving on to the other historic cities of Egypt.
With this project, I aim to take the viewer beyond the postcard shots of the pyramids and the sphinx. I dig deep into this diverse and history-rich city to show a glimpse of Cairo's complexity and people's lives through equally complex and heartfelt moments of everyday life that often raise more questions than provide obvious answers. Moments with which, even if we come from a completely different background, we can relate, smile, empathize and appreciate the shared beauty of life. I have visited numerous times since 2018, with most of the work done in 2020 and 2021, delving deeper into each visit. "
