Trieste Photo Days 2021: first previews

The international urban photography festival Trieste Photo Days is back for its eighth edition and will be held in a circuit of venues in Trieste, seaside city in North-Eastern Italy, starting from August, with a series of preview events taking place outside the city (Photo Days Tour) with exhibitions in Parenzo (Croatia), Rome, San Daniele del Friuli, Cormòns, Sacile and at the Trieste Airport.

The peak of the Festival will be from  28th October to  1st November 2021 with a weekend full of exhibitions, meetings and workshops.

Here are some previews of the Festival programme, which will be officially presented to the public on Thursday 28th October 2021 at the Auditorium of the Revoltella Museum, in the presence of the authorities.


The Guests

Among the guests at the event there will be internationally renowned authors such as Paolo Pellegrin, Francesco Cito and, in live streaming Bruce Gilden, a living icon of street photography and president of the URBAN Photo Awards 2021 jury. Gilden will have the task of selecting the overall winner of URBAN Photo Awards 2021 during the award ceremony scheduled for Saturday 30th October 2021 at the Revoltella Museum Auditorium.


Exhibitions

We have many exhibitions scheduled, starting with the URBAN Photo Awards 2021 exhibitions: at the Biblioteca statale Stelio Crise, in Sala Xenia (the main venue of the Festival) and at the Civico Museo Sartorio with the prize-exhibition of the four URBAN projects selected by Laura Carlini Fanfogna, Director of the Museums and Libraries Service of the Municipality of Trieste, and Claudia Colecchia, Head of the Photo Library of the Civic Museums of History and Art of the Municipality of Trieste and set up with the collaboration of the museum curator Lorenza Resciniti.

The Stelio Crise State Library will also host the big exhibition Tales of the Unwritten, with the book presentation, dedicated to the great international street photography collectives and the authors involved in the project.

The Civico Museo d’Arte Orientale will host an unmissable solo exhibition by Graziano Perotti called Sri Lanka Stories. The shots proposed by the dotART association will be selected by Michela Messina, the museum curator, and Claudia Colecchia, Head of the Photo Library of the Civic Museums of History and Art of the Municipality of Trieste.

At the Stazione Rogers the group exhibition Utopia Melara, curated by Graziano Perotti, dedicated to the symbolic building of Trieste.

The Sala Fittke will host the Trieste Photo Young exhibition. The Accademia Scaglia will hold the exhibition Mythography with a section dedicated to the great Francesco Cito, guest of honour of the project.

This year too, several exhibitions outside the city will be previewed, first and foremost the Bruce Gilden Special Prize exhibition at the Galleria Umberto Mastroianni in Rome, at the Musei di San Salvatore in Lauro; New Buildings in Milan; at the Museo del Territorio in Porec (Croatia), the URBAN prize exhibition; Dante 2021. A photographic tribute at the Museo del Territorio in San Daniele del Friuli and PixAround FVG in Lignano Sabbiadoro. A selection of the best URBAN 2021 projects will also be exhibited at Trieste Airport, at the Museo del Territorio in Cormòns and in the Imaginario Gallery in Sacile.


Projects

As always, we will give space to the initiatives born within the festival involving photographers from the five continents. The photographic volumes dedicated to Dante 2021 A photographic tribute will be presented, curated by Professor Angelo Floramo; the large collective volume Tales of the Unwritten, which also involves productions by the best-known international street photography collectives such as BULB Photos, iN-PUBLiC, Observe Collective, Un-posed, VoidTokyo, Women Street Photographers.

There will also be the wonderful volume of the Bruce Gilden Special Prize, with photographic series by Gilden himself and 10 other lucky authors selected directly by the American master; Mythography, the first of 5 volumes freely inspired by the divinities of the Roman pantheon, with photos by Francesco Cito and other authors, and edited by Professor Enrico Medda; URBAN Unveils the City and its Secrets vol. 07, which contains the best of the URBAN 2021 competition and the URBAN Book Award; PixAround, the first volume of the photographic project dedicated to the discovery of the FVG Region; the book George by Giorgio Galimberti and Cities 9 edited by Italian Street Photography.


Meetings, workshops and MasterClass

On Sunday morning 31st October, Paolo Pellegrin will hold a public meeting presenting his Antarctica project, flanked by the festival artistic director Angelo Cucchetto and Andréa Holzherr, Magnum Photos international exhibition coordinator.

On Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st October there will be three exclusive MasterClasses at the Magazzino delle Idee, with three special guests for three unmissable: Francesco Cito, award-winning photojournalist and winner of two World Press Photos with a focus on The idea behind the photo; Andréa Holzherr, Magnum Photos international exhibition coordinator with a focus on Exhibition projects, construction and presentation of exhibitions; Alberto Prina, coordinator of the Lodi Ethical Photography Festival with a focus on Photography festivals, opportunities for authors.

The Festival will also host two photographic workshops: one about fashion with Enrico Scaglia and one with Giorgio Galimberti: “Volti, Luci, Ombre di Trieste”.

Graziano Perotti will select and award the best projects among those received through a dedicated dotART project consulting initiative.

Many more meetings will take place throughout the Festival weekend at Sala Xenia, the Festival’s main venue.

2021 is also the year of the launch of Trieste Photo Young, the free international challenge dedicated to photographers under 30, promoted by the cultural association dotART with the support of the Pietro Pittini Foundation and in co-organisation with the Municipality of Trieste PAG – Progetto Area Giovani. The finals and the award ceremony will take place live during the Festival.

The exhibition programme will complete with the exhibitions of the Trieste Photo Fringe, the “widespread festival” of Trieste Photo Days, which takes place in a selected circuit of venues in the city centre.
